BRAZIL APPROVES NEW RULES FOR MICRO GENERATION AND MINI GENERATION

On 24 November 2015, ANEEL (the national electric energy agency) issued NT nº 17, introducing changes in legislation for Micro and Mini generation.

These changes include the reduction of the time limits for licensing, which pass from the current 82 days to 23 days in the case of micro generation and for 43 days in the case of mini generation. In addition to the change of the deadlines for licensing, new ranges were defined, micro power generation being characterized by source that produces up to 75 kW and a mini generation from 75 kW to 5 MW.

Another innovation of the NT paragraph 17 concerns the possibility of installation of distributed generation into condos. In this configuration, the energy generated can be distributed among the owners in percentages set by themselves.

Already the “shared generation”, enables various interested parties to join a consortium or a cooperative, install a micro or mini distributed generation and use the energy generated to reduce the bills of the members or member, being that the participating companies do not have to be in the same place, and the power generated also does not have to be made at the place where they are headquartered.

In addition to the changes mentioned above, the most pertinent is the possibility of the same company can benefit its network of consumer sites, with the credits generated by renewable energy-generating source, regardless of its location. We give a practical example: assuming that a trading company (retail) install in 25% of its stores, the source (s) of renewable energy generation and produces 50% points that the needs of all its commercial network with the generated credit can take out on their global energy account, the value corresponding to the energy generated, thus reducing in 50%, monthly energy costs. These credits are valid for 60 months, so during this time you can use in the best way the accumulated value.

At a time when the economic crisis forces companies to revise their operating costs, from the staff to consumables, this measure allows a smart manager to deal with one of the costliest of enterprise resources, energy!

This new legislation which came into force on March 1 2016 will introduce mechanisms that will boost the energy market. ANEEL predicts that these new rules will generate up to about 1.2 million in 2024 consumer units with capacity to produce their own energy, totaling 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity.
